SATURDAY MORNING

It took me a while to go back to sleep after Britney and Reggie left because I was worried. I was concerned that they’d tell the police, or whoever found them, where we were. If anyone came to get us, we’d have no choice but to leave, and I didn’t want to go before having a chance to try to help Josh.

It was bright outside when I woke up. My first impression was that the classroom had lost its aura of mystery, even though I knew that supernatural events had actually happened during the night.

Alex and John were up already. I was surprised and relieved to see that the deserters had come back. Britney and Reggie were sleeping side by side a couple of metres from me. When they woke up, they explained they’d come back because they couldn’t agree on which direction to take.

We shared the energy bars and the bottle of water I had in my backpack. Two bars divided by five is not what I call a feast, but it’s better than nothing.

While we were eating, I noticed that Britney was staring at me. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“How come one of your eyes is blue, and the other one is brown?”

Shoot! I’d forgotten I’d lost a contact lens. She would have to notice it. It was rather embarrassing.

“It’s nothing. I lost a lens last night.”

“What’s the deal?” Reggie asked. “Are your eyes blue or brown?”

“Brown.”

“I get called Barbie, but it’s the football player that wears coloured lenses,” Britney said. “Ha! Now we’ve seen it all!”

“Do many players change their eye colour like that?” Reggie asked. “Do you do it to see the football better or to seduce your opponents?”

“Forget it.”

“What else about you is fake?” Reggie asked. “Come on! It’s confession time.”

“Reg, stop,” John said.

“No. We have the right to know. Come on! What else?”

“Forget it,” I repeated. “It’s just a detail.”

“We thought you were an authentic dude,” Britney said.

“You’re talking about authenticity?” Alex said. “That’s a bit rich!”

“Your blond hair, is that artificial too?” Reggie asked.

“No, that’s my real colour.”

“Whoa!” Britney said. “You won’t make me believe that. Your stylist had a hand in it. Admit it.”

“Leave him alone,” Alex said.

“What about your muscles?” Reggie asked. “I bet they’re blown up by steroids.”

“No! I’ve worked hard to get them. I won’t let anyone accuse me of using drugs.”

“Our sportsman just went from authentic to synthetic,” Reggie said.

“He went from blue-eyed charmer to brown-eyed liar,” Britney said.

“Enough!” Alex said.

It was embarrassing that Alex came to my defence, but I was unable to stand up for myself even though they were a real pain. I’m like that. I want to save others, but I can’t fight for myself outside a football field.

When Brit and Reg were done making fun of me, it was time to go look for Josh’s body. Not having a map or compass, we had to rely on our instinct. If there was a stream nearby, it should be relatively easy to find.
